The fix is, as you note, not the right thing to do. It defies the purpose of
the topLevelObject flag - which was put in there to solve several issues with
another real-life application. Basically, putting the code back in would lead
to endless recursion in several cases, which is not acceptable.
However, if you can produce a stand-alone test case I will take a look at the
issue at some point.
