I just came across this bug in the latest SVN revision. It's now more than a
year and a half old and pretty simple to fix. I've added a patch which adds a
unit test (Slightly different than Jamie's, but could be smaller, if there
weren't bug #425345) and a solution to this problem.

Please don't let this bug stay alive for another 1,5 years - it's probably not
a commonly encountered bug, but if it bites you, you will probably loose some
hair when scratching your head for an hour, trying to figure out what's going
wrong :-)
