I tried to reproduce this with Mono from r102619 on SLED 10 SP1 i586, but I got
the same "no such table" error both times.

Could you try this with Mono from SVN?

Here are some SVN packages (if you have suse somewhere, or you could try these
using the Mono VMware image):
