This still works fine for me on my G4 mac, OS 10.5.2, svn head mono as of
today.

I can only suggest you have a local installation issue that is preventing this
working.  Try removing all traces of mono from your machine and installing from
scratch.  If that doesn't cure it we'll have to think of something else that
might be affecting your particular system.
