O.K. I have confirmed that this specific issue does not occur under 1.9_5
running under Ubuntu. (I now have different - presentation related -
problems... but at least it's a step further.)

Since it appears that Andy Hume was correct about this being a duplicate of bug
349655, I shall mark it as such.
