You're correct.  When I used the 1.2.6 version of mono, it worked, using
/home/user/Desktop.  Yeah!  Thanks for your help.  

Btw, if I want to update my mono installation in the future, what is the
procedure?  I don't need to have multiple versions installed, just the newest. 
In the case of using the binary installer, I'm not sure what directory I should
tell it to install to in order to overwrite my existing mono install.
