Fixed in HEAD r121997.

The bug is caused by the proper implementation of lots of stuff in the type
description layer between now and 1.2.6. Basically I think before we never
returned the correct converter (ReferenceConverter). The implementation of
ReferenceConverter was bad, but this is now fixed.
