For better or worse, 2.2 preview 2 seems to work better than either 2.2 preview
1
or also 2.0.1 . The "Generic Error [GDI+ status: GenericError]" in either 2.0.1
and 2.2 preview 1 are gone - replaced by the application's splash screen in 2.2
preview 2, like it does in windows. 

So it seems like the regression is not only gone, but the specific code path is
more functional than before.

If somebody can say what changed between 2.2 preview 1 and 2.2 preview 2 which
affects how some application's splash screen (a bmp file) works, I'll be happy
to know. In any case, this can probably be closed.
