The patch attached to this bug has a number of things in it that are not
strictly related to the bug.  Do we want to try to apply exactly this patch
(because that's what the fix was verified with?) or do we want to strip down
the patch to the bare minimum before submitting it?

I will wait for a definitive statement (and the stripped-down patch, if
neccesary) before submitting.
