CLR: so it's not the transform (identity), it's not the brush (alpha is 1.0)
and it's not SL ClipProperty but...

calling cairo_clip_extends shows different (changing) values for it's clipping
region, e.g. 8,8 to 480,300

That would explain why the gray border isn't always present. Now I need to find
out who's playing with the clip outside save/restore calls.
