Dale, I ran into the same issue a few weeks ago. You have to install
 automake 1.9 and define WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.9.

Hey, the product/component already existed. Jeff moved the bug into it.
If Gert's suggestion doesn't work then please repost the whole output,
the error may be the same but the process leading to it will be
different (some extra steps) and would be useful to compare to mine.
Something else may have went wrong earlier, possible the missing GIF
library, and isn't reported correctly (it probably stops
cairo/configure from being generated but this error is reported
earlier than the original one).
from your log
configure: WARNING: *** GIF loader will not be built (giflibrary not
found) ***
checking for DGifOpenFileName in -lungif... no
configure: WARNING: *** GIF loader will not be built (ungiflibrary not
found) ***
checking for libpng12... yes
checking for LIBEXIF... no
./configure: line 22442: test: too many arguments
You can also try installing libgif and rebuild.
