+Summary: All open windows disappear while running tests

+While running tests with make ('make run-tests' or 'make run-tests-local') 
+sometime towards the end of the test run all the open windows disappear 
+and they don't show up in the task bar either. Their processes are still 
+running though.
+
+I can still access applications that put icons in the notification area 
+(even though they were open when this happens, it's like if they were just 
+minimized).
+
+Sometimes all the icons on the desktop disappears as well (and right-
+clicking does not bring up any menus).
+
+The xgl woggling is still working.
+
+Things I tried that didn't work:
+Killed gnome-panel. Restarted automatically, but still no windows in the 
+task bar.
+Killed compiz, restarted it, no windows in the task bar, and no window 
+decorations on new windows.
