+Apparently, my repro described the .NET 2.0 behavior. You confirmed 
+(on irc) that you were running .NET 1.1, not 2.0.

+The .NET 1.1 behaviour is indeed that the ItemCheck event is fired 
+twice (check&uncheck) when double-clicking the state icon, if only a 
+single icon is available in the StateImageList.
