 i've replaced the crashing with error dialogs, so i'm going to
 downgrade this to normal, but clearly it's not an optimal solution. 
 we need to figure out why alex's printer (which is in cups) is failing
 to be recognized as valid.

+In my system, cups is throwing a null pointer on getCupsPPD with the
+printer name that cups itself previously returned as the default one,
+so there's something amiss with that lookup.

+Speculating, it seems it might do that if the printer is installed but
+actually not plugged in... Could you try the app's behaviour with the
+printer plugged in and when it isn't plugged in please?
