+Turns out I can set:
+
+FONTCONFIG_PATH="/opt/mono/etc/fonts"
+
+and then add:
+
+/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts
+
+to /opt/mono/etc/fonts/local.conf
+
+and it works.  I tested digger, mastermind, and gemswap.
