 Hmm.  GNU Aclocal doesn't contain PKG_CHECK_MODULES on any architecture.
 
 That m4 macro comes from pkg-config.  You need to have pkg-config

+Ah, ok.  Thanks for the clarification.  The GNU aclocal which installs
+on FreeBSD via ports doesn't know anything about the m4 files which
+are part of FreeBSD's own pkgconfig and aclocal, unfortunately - and
+adding pkgconfig's m4 path to the gnu ported tools breaks them terribly.
