 Could you try the mono package from the freebsd ports tree ? That
 seems to work fine for most people. Unfortunately, it doesn't support
 1.0.4 yet.

+I have tried the version from ports and the version from bsd#, all 
+of them exhibit the same problem. They are supposed to work with 
+freebsd 5.3, and I am running 5.2.1.
