simply shutdown, leaving no record of any reason for the shutdown that I can find. One of these
times I was in the middle of running a program that I have used for a long time when the system
 simply powered off.

I have installed no other software recently, so Mono seems the most likely culprit, although I was
not running any Mono applications at the time of the crash.

+Well, if you were not running mono, why should this be a mono bug?
+How did you install mono? mono by default installs in /usr/local and
+has not files that interfers with MacOSX that I know of.
+Even if your issue is somehow related to mono, it looks like either
+harware problems or a kernel bug, so you may want to try to gather
+more info and report it to Apple.
