TextView has support for rich text with TextTag, Buffer, Iterator, Pango 
(keywords for search).
Selection can be simulated with foreground and background color.

other solution is maybe to look into Monodevelop source I see 
Mono.TextEditor assembly there.
I think I saw recently that MD used GtkSourceView but switched to 
Mono.TextEditor
