[Gtk-sharp-list] trouble compiling the gtk hello app in 3.0.10

Hi all, complete noob here.
I just installed the Mono 3.0.10 beta (on OS X), and created and compiled
the console/gtk/winforms Hello World apps. No trouble with the console and
winforms, but the gtk-hello app would build but not run.
When I ran it, it gave some error about not finding a gtk dll. But Mono
comes with gtk#, right? And it built without error!
And then things get weirder:
I installed Xamarin Studio (which I guess is MonoDevelop? argh). Xamarin
immediately downloaded a Mono 2.10 update. It didn't give me an option to
point it at my 3.0.10 install, so I just clicked "OK".
Back to my command line: 2.10 seems to have "hidden" my 3.0.10, I think.
And now I can't even build that gtk-hello app anymore ("Package
gtk-sharp-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path").
I'm kind of frustrated now. I have two key questions:
1) Why couldn't 3.0.10 run my gtk-hello app?
2) Why did Xamarin Studios replace my 3.0.10 install with 2.10, and how I do
I undo this?
