After some help on IRC, I was able to find a 2.10.3 runtime package for
gtk# that fixed my troubles.

Actually it fixed all the lingering bugs that I was putting off working
on - so that was quite pleasant.

Not so pleasant that I needed help to find the 2.10.3 release, or that
it's from a 3rd party.

Why is the official copy so badly out of date?
