The "Writing responsive applications" article covers this quite well, IMHO.

Seems very nice, tidy, and to the point.  I've been able to write  
several multithreaded Gtk# apps based on this information;  this issue  
seems to be much more documented than many others [regarding Gtk#]. :)

But maybe I'm missing your point since the article mentioned below is  
about Gtk and not Gtk#
