[Gtk-sharp-list] extending a cell renderer

I'm trying to extend a cell renderer.  I need to catch mouse clicks.
How can I do this?  I've set the renderer's Mode to Activatable, but
nothing ever gets sent to the Activate method when I click on the cell.
What else do I need to do?
