Thanks for the comment.  I've been reading the sources you suggested and
others.  It appears that "Image" is too heavy for what I want to do.  So
GtkPixmap seems like the better widget to use.

So, related to this - how does one display a GIF or JPEG file using Glade?  Do I
have to convert such files to Xpm format in order to display them using
GtkPixmap?  If so, how?
